Dirty Little Secrets

Gilbert Parker once said, ~In all secrets there is a kind of guilt, however beautiful or joyful they may be, or for what good end they may be set to serve. Secrecy means evasion, and evasion means a problem to the moral mind.~ Let me ask you this question, do you have any secrets that you may be hiding from your own family, friends, and/or significant other? Secrets that can possibly hurt not only yourself but others around you, blackmail worthy, or simply embarrassing for anyone to know. Hey, it's a part of life as one chooses not to reveal certain pieces of information from your past and depending on the type of person you are it can either be an easy or tough situation to keep on the down low.

Oftentimes, a particular secret one holds concerning his or her health can hurt both emotionally, as well as physically, when it involves food. Eating disorders such as Anorexia or Bulimia are no laughing matter and more often than not women, more so than guys, go through it because of the pressure to be thin caused by either guys, society, the media, or Hollywood. It's a sad situation indeed when a woman sees herself as overweight and takes dangerous measures to lose weight such as throwing up the food she ate, which she can hide for months or even years. Let me tell you something, it truly boggles my mind as to why perfectly healthy and beautiful women put themselves through that kind of torture to where they risk losing their own life.

When it comes to keeping a secret such as infidelity it can most definitely hurt not only the one he or she supposedly loves but it can also hurt those who are closely connected as well. Families can be torn apart to the point that the kids, if any, are caught up in the middle in a proverbial tug of war. Why do it in the first place? One reason that comes to my mind is being bored in the marriage and that thrill of meeting someone new makes trying not to get caught red handed, so to speak, is considered an adrenaline rush. For the question can be asked of you, whether you're married or in a significant relationship, have you ever thought or actually cheated on the one you loved behind their back?

Essentially, when you talk about keeping secrets on the down low there is one place that should automatically come to each and every person's mind. Las Vegas, otherwise known as Sin City, is a place that has countless untold stories by people who have sworn absolutely secrecy to never utter a word about their exploits or particular events that he/she/they may or may not possibly remember due to the quantity of alcohol one consumed during one's time there. Yet, pictures can say much more than words can ever could as a person can be blackmailed by one's own friends, which they hold over your head for many years. Hey, as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

In retrospect, people all over the world probably have secrets that are considered to be a skeleton or skeletons in one's closet that he or she doesn't want to be opened ever again. It's those particular skeletons in one's closet that can most definitely wreck havoc on a person's life such as using drugs, giving up a baby for adoption, having an abortion, changing one's gender, coming out of the closet, having family/ancestors who are/were criminals and/or murderers, or whatever the case may be. Ultimately, secrets can most definitely hold power over you depending on what type of secret it is. In the end, I ask you this simple question: do you have any dirty little secrets, which is a song by the band All American Rejects.
