Funny Bone

Comedian Lenny Bruce once said, ~ Today's comedian has a cross to bear that he built himself. A comedian of the older generation did an "act" and he told the audience "This is my act." Today's comic is not doing an act. The audience assumes he's telling the truth. What is truth today may be a damn lie next week.~ Without a doubt, laughter is considered the best medicine and you most definitely have a deep appreciation for people who make you laugh, especially those who do it for a living. Yet, you truly have an even deeper appreciation for a comedian who has that innate ability to completely avoid using profanity in their act just to get a teary eyed, gut wrenching, side splitting laugh like the following three individuals: Sinbad, Tim Conway, and Bob Hope.

Let me ask you this question to those who have watched on Comedy Central or quite possibly live in person Sinbad's stand up routine, did you enjoy not only listening to him but watching him too knowing his performances are 100% clean? I think many would agree the man who once starred in A Different World can make any subject matter absolutely hilarious and to do it without spewing profanity is considered an impressive situation indeed. When it comes to his performances, he talks about experiences that each one of us can relate to from growing up as a kid and getting spanked to dealing with the pangs of getting older. Let me tell you something, he is very versatile but a highly underrated comedian who deserves much bigger props don't you think?

If you think about it, the days of a classic comedian have unfortunately fallen by the wayside as it has been replaced by vulgar content filled with profanity and sexual innuendo...but I digress. Essentially, when I mention classic comedians I'm referring to the likes of a comedy legend such as Tim Conway who could make you laugh without uttering a single word. What ultimately makes him funny without the use of curse words in his act is not only his comedic timing but his old fashioned sense of witt that just brings a smile to your face, especially when teamed up with his comedic partner in crime Harvey Korman. Thinking about it, of the many hilarious comedy sketches he's been a part of on The Carol Burnett Show the one known as The Dentist is by far the best of them all.

For the question can be asked to those who actually know who Bob Hope is, do you think he is considered the king of clean comedy? If you said yes I would agree with you because you were fortunate enough to listen and/or watch his specials on tv back in the day. you know how much of a treat it was to be witnessing greatness right before our eyes. For it's true that you didn't have to worry about any profanity coming out of his mouth. Instead, what came out of it was pure comedy cold as he expressed funny satire oftentimes political ones at that. Hey, he is and will always be deemed a true comedic entertainer who appeared, as well as hosted 199 known USO shows to the point where in 1996 U.S. Congress honored him by declaring him the "first and only honorary veteran of the U.S. armed forces."

In retrospect, there are countless comedians who have a clean act and have not sold out by adding profanity into their act in order to get more fans or exposure for that matter. Comedy greats like Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, and Bill Cosby continue to have flourishing careers without the use of any profanity whatsoever in their performances. Granted, comedians such as Katt Williams, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Daniel Tosh, etc. use it and have had not only very lucrative careers but huge fan bases also. What it primarily comes down to is that what may be funny to some may not be funny to others type mentality. In the end, the old school comics are and will always be the best because they didn't have to curse or use the "N" word in their act and knew how to tickle our funny bone the right way.
