Overrated

Two time Oscar winning actress Jodie Foster once said, ~Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from.~ Are you normal? Essentially, it's a question every person has been asked once or quite possibly many times before. Thinking about it, you aren't easily offended by being asked that particular question because to be perfectly honest nobody in this world is considered 100% normal. For it’s an interesting and not to mention humorous situation indeed as countless people practically go against the norm in order to show/express their own unique individuality. You see, each one of us aren't normal by any stretch of the imagination and we tend to show our friends, family, co-workers, etc. in the following three ways: think, act, and most definitely dress.

If you think about it, when it comes to not being normal a person can certainly show it by verbally expressing their unique way of thinking. I think it's safe to say we all know someone or in fact are that someone who when he/she/you opens your/their mouth sharing whatever comes to mind strange and/or blank stares are directed their/your way. Yet, one can't help but be absolutely fascinated in what their/your saying to the point where it's not only entertaining, but I dare say thought provoking as well. One notable human being who was at one time normal but now is totally out there mentally is Gary Busey who when he shares his seemingly unique philosophy you're simply left scratching your head. However, you end up thinking to yourself that you actually understood some, most, or all of what he said.

Without a doubt, actions speak louder than words and it truly rings true concerning anyone who does things so out of the ordinary you wonder if they're in the right mindset. Hey, every person does or has done something so out of character on any given day but it's how high on the abnormal scale inevitably determines whether you're deemed weird/strange or need to be sent to a mental institution for psychiatric help. A perfect example is a celebrity with an ego maniacal, narcissistic personality whose actions of the past have been questionable to down right unbelievable, especially with the leaked Scientology interview he did putting him in a whole new light. True, on a professional level Tom Cruise is mostly golden in the box office but when it comes to him personally he's a complete and utter whack job who is living in his own distorted world.

Let me ask you this question to those who have their own style in clothing: in your mind how normal is it to wear something you believe makes you stand out a bit from the crowd. Granted, each of us do from time to time following fashion trends that are style one minute and then are out the next. It's pretty much the norm not just in the United States but all over the world. Now, would you ever consider going completely out of the norm and wear something like countless amounts of meat in order to make a fashion statement? My answer is no and hopefully yours too. Fortunately, one such individual is bold enough to redefine what isn't normal when it involves fashion and has become the quintessential poster child for wearing outlandish stuff so much so you're no longer surprised at what Lady GaGa is wearing to where you think she can't top herself. Could she?

In retrospect, being normal takes a lot of hard work to pull off but pulling off not being normal is easier than you think. Oftentimes, being you all the while showing how real you are, weird tendencies/quirks and all, is much better than trying to pull off something you know you aren't. Let me tell you something, I know it's not considered normal by society standards to dress up in costume when movies such as Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. play; but when you're a die hard fan you don't care what society thinks because you enjoy it. Ultimately, you have to be comfortable within yourself to express your inner nerd/dork/geekness and still be you without selling out, whereby showing how abnormally cool you are. In the end, who really wants to be normal in this crazy mixed up world we live in because I don't and besides, it's highly overrated if you ask me.
