Immortality

Each of us has had the thought of living forever, being immortal in a manner of speaking. BUT what kind of immortality would one seek? The type of immortality of Dracula in which one would not see the light of day ever again? Or the type of Immortality of the Highlander, Duncan McLeod, where there can be only one. A constant looking over one's shoulder as other immortals seek to take your head. There are many types of immortality but which would one pick if you had the choice?

Never getting sick, never getting old, never getting any broken bones are some of the advantages of being immortal. Living life to the extreme and not caring about the consequences or the safety of one's own health. It's like a kid being in a candy store where all one wants is the rush of adrenaline in your blood. For the world is at your fingertips just waiting to be explored and challenged to its total limits. Climbing the highest mountain so to speak and never coming down from being so high.

Yet there are the drawbacks of having immortality. The ones we love grow older and pass away and we still live as young as can be. The friends made have grown old and wither away like a wilting flower that hasn't had any water to live. For one has to live with the memories of past loves and past friends who one has made over the centuries. One can feel empty inside when the life you once knew is over and you have to start over. It's a constant cycle that will never end, for the people around will age but you will not.

One can go insane at the thought of living forever. For the things they have seen, the people they have met during one's past lives, and the enemies they have made would affect that person physically and psychologically. For one can't be shot or stabbed, for if one suffers a broken bone it heals at an instant. Don't get me wrong, it would be fantastic to have that but it would mess with the person's mind years or centuries down the road. For one might end up in a padded room, looking at ink blots, and talking to shrinks for the rest of one's life.

In the end, the thoughts of immortality fade when one looks at the aspect of living life to the fullest day by day. Stopping to smell the roses so to speak and basically taking risks every now and then. I ask you this question, would you go through a century of heartache and pain to live forever or would you accept the life you are living now? Immortality, what a concept.
